What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) — And Why It Matters Now

There's a shift happening in how people find businesses, and most owners haven't clocked it yet.

For twenty years the routine was the same. You had a question, you typed it into Google, you got ten blue links, and you picked one. Everything we call SEO was built to win a spot in that list.

That routine is breaking. People are opening ChatGPT and typing "who's a good contractor near Lewes" or "where should I eat in Rehoboth." And the AI doesn't hand back ten links to sort through. It just answers. It names a business, or two, and that's the end of the search.

Which raises an uncomfortable question: when that happens in your category, is it naming you?

So what is AEO, exactly?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of positioning your business so AI systems cite and recommend it. Those systems — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google's AI Overviews, Gemini, Claude — are the "answer engines." Instead of competing for a rank, you're competing to be the business the machine actually names.

That's the whole idea. It sounds abstract until you watch it happen in your own market, and then it gets very concrete very fast.

How AEO is different from SEO

SEO competes for position. AEO competes for citation.

In traditional search, ranking fourth still gets you traffic. Somebody scrolls, somebody clicks. In an AI answer there is no fourth place. The model names one business, maybe three, and everyone else may as well not exist. It's winner-take-most in a way the old blue links never were.

The other real difference is what the systems are reading. Search engines were built to rank pages. Answer engines are trying to understand entities — who you are, what you do, where you operate, whether you're credible. They assemble that from your site, your structured data, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and every other mention of you across the web. Then they decide whether they trust you enough to put your name in an answer.

Here's the good news: the two disciplines overlap enormously. Nearly everything that makes AEO work also makes your SEO better. This isn't a question of abandoning one for the other.

Why this matters right now

Three things are converging.

The behavior is already shifting. Not universally, and not in every demographic — but enough that ignoring it is a choice. Ask anyone under 35 how they researched their last purchase.

Google itself is pushing it. AI Overviews now sit above organic results for a large share of queries. Even people who never open ChatGPT are getting AI-generated answers whether they asked for one or not.

Almost nobody in local markets is working on it. That's the part worth sitting with. SEO is a knife fight — everyone's been optimizing for fifteen years. AEO is wide open in most regional markets, and early positioning compounds. The businesses that establish credibility with these systems now will be the defaults later.

What AEO actually involves

It isn't one trick. It's six things working together.

Structured content writing

AI systems extract answers from content that's written as clear, factual question-and-answer. Not marketing fluff — direct responses to real questions people ask. A page that plainly answers "how much does this cost" is dramatically more quotable than one that says you offer competitive pricing.

Schema markup

Code added to your site that explicitly tells machines what your business is, where it operates, what it offers, and what people say about it. Think of it as a name tag written in a language crawlers read natively instead of making them guess from your paragraphs.

Brand entity building

AI systems trust businesses they can verify. That means the same name, the same description, the same address, the same phone number everywhere you appear online. Inconsistency reads as uncertainty, and uncertain businesses don't get recommended.

Conversational content

People talk to AI differently than they type into Google. They write full sentences. They ask follow-ups. Your content needs to answer the way people actually ask, not the way keyword tools suggest.

Citation building

Every credible mention of your business across the web is a vote. Your Google Business Profile, industry directories, local press, review platforms. Breadth of consistent mentions is one of the strongest trust signals these systems have.

Monitoring

You can't improve what you don't measure. That means regularly checking which queries surface your business across the major AI tools, and adjusting based on what you find.

Where to start this week

You don't need a budget to begin. Do this:

Open ChatGPT and ask it the question your best customer would ask. "Best social media agency in Southern Delaware." "Who should I hire to remodel a kitchen in Rehoboth." Whatever your version is. Then see what comes back.

If you're named, find out what the AI said about you and whether it's accurate. If you're not, look at who is — that's your actual competition in this channel, and it may not be who you assumed.

That five-minute exercise tells you more about where you stand than any report. Most business owners have never run it.

If you'd rather not sort this out alone, that's what we do. Del Oro Media builds AEO into every engagement, and the first conversation is free.

Frequently asked questions

What is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of optimizing your brand so it gets cited and recommended by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini. Where SEO aims to rank your page in a list of links, AEO aims to make your business the answer the AI actually gives.

What is the difference between SEO and AEO?

SEO optimizes for ranking in traditional search results, where the user sees ten links and chooses one. AEO optimizes for being named inside a single AI-generated answer, where the user sees one recommendation and no list. SEO competes for position; AEO competes for citation. The two overlap heavily and most businesses should do both.

Does AEO replace SEO?

No. AEO builds on SEO rather than replacing it. AI answer engines draw heavily on the same signals search engines use, including your website content, structured data, reviews, and business listings. Strong SEO fundamentals make AEO far easier, which is why the two work best together.

How do I get my business mentioned by ChatGPT?

Focus on four things: publish clear question-and-answer content that directly answers what people ask, add structured data (schema markup) so AI can parse what your business does, keep your business details identical everywhere online, and build consistent citations across your Google Business Profile, directories, and review sites.

Is AEO worth it for a small local business?

Often more so than for a large one. AI answer engines name a small number of businesses per query, so a well-optimized local business with a specific service area can be the recommended answer for searches like “best contractor near Lewes” where national competitors are not relevant.
