The Psychological Effects of the Digital Experience

Op-Ed By Alex Gold · Del Oro Media

Social media is a double-edged sword in the world of our evolving digital landscape.

On the one hand, it has created an entirely new ecosystem for individuals to connect with each other and their favorite brands across multiple platforms anywhere in the world. On the other hand, recent studies have shown that this level of constant connectivity has its consequences.

Take for example a recent article published in the Wall Street Journal highlighting the negative psychological impact social media is having on teen girls — diving deeper into a Pew Research study that found striking levels of depression and anxiety linked directly to the sociological aspect of digital connectivity within our everyday lives.

Another well-written piece by Toby Daniels for Social Media Week highlights the dangers "infinite scrolling" and overuse of social media can have on the human psyche. And an article by Erica Perry from CrowdCentric examines how social media has shifted our cultural values:

"...there are growing concerns that we've squandered this opportunity in lieu of chasing reach and scale and prioritizing content that distracts and interrupts, in turn promoting divisiveness and narcissism."

These considerations leave us with a moral quandary: Do brands have an ethical responsibility to be cognizant of their impact within the realm of social media? Is there a level of social good that should be inherent within some aspect of a brand's digital identity? How can we, as industry professionals, help to shed light on some of these important issues while also seeking to drive our business goals?
