On Media Literacy

Op-Ed By Alex Gold · Del Oro Media

Some have described the advent of the Internet as the "Information Age." I would argue our digital society has devolved into a "Disinformation Age."

Media literacy can be defined as "the ability or skills to critically analyze for accuracy, credibility, or evidence of bias the content created and consumed in various media, including radio and television, the internet, and social media." As a society, we have lost much of the general knowledge, skills, and ability requisite for the accurate dissemination of information — and this is a critical flaw in the advancement of humanity.

Without media literacy, how can anyone possibly differentiate between legitimate and dubious sources? The outright attack on "mainstream media" has ironically created a new wave of sources peddling unfounded conspiracy theories and disturbing headlines with fervent bases of support. Sociological pressures have further induced the adoption of fringe groups and expressions of extremism, where the hallmark trait is the vehement denial of any idea or fact that deviates from an accepted set of beliefs. This sets an extremely dangerous precedent.

The longer our digital selves continue to exist in echo chambers of homogenous thoughts and beliefs, the deeper our societal rift will become. We need to encourage healthy debates and showcase point and counterpoint together in our digital realm — in order to spur change and set our societal evolution on a path forward.
